If you would have asked me this time last year, or any year really for that matter, if I’d be all super stoked about Valentine’s day project that included leopard print there would be laughter. Big belly guffaw type of laughter even!

DIY Fringe-y Heart Garland

I’m not sure why but suddenly this year it just seemed like such a neat idea. Bright red and leopard print together in a garland with traditional hearts. How fab is that? As it turns out it pretty dang fab!

And to top it off, this project is easy, cheap and oh, did I mention cheap? Grab your supplies and let’s get after it.

For this project you will need:

DIY Fringe-y Heart Garland

I don’t know about you but I cannot cut the shape of a heart on my dang life. I don’t know why I don’t know how but they always come out stupid looking. AND no two look the same. And that is why I found these fabulously pre-cut hearts at Hobby Lobby.

DIY Fringe-y Heart GarlandGrab your roll of crepe paper and cut off a piece that is about a yard long. Take that piece and fold so that the strip is long and narrow, like seen above. Next accordion fold the crepe paper going backward and forward for about 3 inches.

Using scissors carefully snip down the edge that isn’t folded down. Go down the length of your piece.

Unroll and you’ve got some awesome fringe!

DIY Fringe-y Heart GarlandTaking a paintbrush, place a line of decoupage onto the bottom of the heart about half an inch to an inch from the bottom depending on the size of your heart. Press your fringe down trying to only get the top portion stuck to the glue and not the fringe part. I will tell you, that the fringe is going to get glued down in places. Don’t worry when it happens because it will, but for the best volume we at least want to try to not glue the fringe down!

As you work you can keep the length of your fringe. Just tear it nearby where it comes off of the heart shape. There is no need for scissors.

DIY Fringe-y Heart GarlandContinue until you finish the heart off! Set aside to fully dry and make as many as you need for the length you desire.

When dry, you can trim the excess fringe so that these hearts look heart-like again!

Isn’t it cute? I LOVE these hearts!

Tape your hearts to your cord or string at equal intervals to make your garland! I used a 2-ounce craft acrylic bottle as a spacer to make sure mine were all equidistant apart.

Isn’t that so fun? Big secret… that cord is actually trim I bought to start making my own panties. But my sewing skills never got up to snuff enough for undergarments! It makes the garland a bit sexy, no?

And those leopard hearts I love even more than the red!

And strewn about my mirror they add a fun bit of romantic pop to the room!
