A Fun & Healthy School Lunch, Bento Style.

We’ve been back to school for a few weeks now which means my lunch-packing skills are finally getting back into a rhythm. The first weeks are ALWAYS the hardest! Over the summer we rarely pack lunches, unless we’re all traveling or going on a day trip, but now that the school year is back in full swing, I’m back to making ten lunches a week for my two ever-hungry, always-growing boys!

For me, the best school lunches have to be simple to make, easily transported (aka lunch bag friendly), delicious and appealing to my discerning little foodies, and most of all healthy!

Since I’ve also been trying to get into the habit of making school lunches the night before (as opposed to scrambling to make them each morning) I have been putting together all of the fridge-friendly items, then popping them straight into the lunch bags and placing them in the fridge. The next morning my kids can simply grab-and-go! For hot items, like soup or anything that needs a thermos, we heat those up in the morning and add them to the lunch bags.

Today I wanted to share one of my go-to school lunches that my son, Charlie, just LOVES.

Here’s what Charlie’s lunch contains:

  • His favorite peanut butter sandwich, made with Gold Emblem Abound No Stir Creamy Peanut Butter
  • Grapes
  • Cheese (cut into fun shapes with tiny cookie cutters because we’re fairly certain it tastes better this way!)
  • Gold Emblem Abound Cranberry Oat Bran Cookies
  • Celery Sticks

I love sharing a variety of foods that my son loves in smaller quantities to give him the chance to snack and enjoy his favorites without being overwhelmed by a huge amount of anything. I find that, especially with fruits and veggies, he likes to have a handful of a few different things instead of lots of one thing — variety is, after all, the spice of life, right? I like to think of lunchtime as a tiny buffet — it’s just more fun that way!

As I mentioned before, sending a HEALTHY lunch is my no. 1 concern, especially when I’m sending my boys off to soak up all that fantastic new information at school. I want food that’ll fuel their bodies AND their brains!
