During my visit to Los Angeles for the promotion of Iron Man 3, I had the chance to interview Ty Simpkins, who plays Harley Keener, a kid genius that Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) meets when he needs him most. The relationship between Tony and Harley is comical, genuine and endearing.

Below is our Q&A with Ty, who was a joy to interview!

What’s your favorite aspect of your character?

I think my favorite aspect of being my character is that like I get to meet Tony Stark. But I’m similar to him. Because I’m a genius in the movie. And he’s a genius in the movie, of course, more of a genius than my character.”

Have you always been a fan of Marvel movies?

Yes, I have. I love the Marvel movies.”

Do you have a favorite hero?

Iron Man. It’s been my dream.”

How does it feel to be working with Robert?

“Oh, it’s awesome. Like literally Robert Downey Jr. is my favorite person.”

What was your biggest challenge during filming?

“One line kept getting annoying. I had to say “retro-reflection panels”. It was really hard. And then once the day was over I knew how to say it. That happens a lot.”

Any funny moments on set?

“I had to do this stunt where I’m sitting on a villains lap. Then I blind him with this thing and jump off of his lap. But I took the thing out and I blinded him basically. He started tipping back with the chair and I couldn’t get off and I feel back with him.”

Were you nervous when you met Robert?

He actually asked me that. I said, no, I’m just really excited to meet him.”
