Beaded Bubble Wands

It hasn’t been all that long since I moved away from Oklahoma and my family but it feels like I never, ever get to see them. So far in the last 8 months I’ve been able to visit Oklahoma about 24 days and that seems just crazy to me.

Luckily this past week I was able to visit everyone for about 8 days and it was quite lovely. We went to Six Flags not once, but twice. We visited the Dallas Aquarium (a must) and we spent a heck of a lot of time at the pool at the little motel Rob and I rented for the week.

Our first night in town we got to our hotel late, late, late. Around 9 or 10. And when we tried to get into our room the key card didn’t work PLUS the bed was unmade and the TV was on. They gave us the wrong room number! Right? Wrong? We got a dirty room with a lock that worked twice out of the, maybe 20-30 times the front desk manager tried to get the door open for us. After being brought rags, multipurpose cleaners and clean pillowcases (I guess sheets were out of the question) to get the room cleaned up we were informed that we probably couldn’t leave the room if the lock messed up with us inside but somebody could help us in the morning. Oh, but if we could get out we should just leave the door ajar when going out and running errands or whatever because it’s a really safe neighborhood. Isn’t that just nuts?

Since it was the day before the Fourth of July places were booked and it was around 10:30 at night by this point. We were so lucky to find a room in this basic but very clean motel. At first I think the kids were disappointed that we had an outdoor pool rather than the usual indoor pool but that was the way that was going to go this trip, anyway. The first time they dipped their toes in the water it wouldn’t have mattered if this pool was on the moon. They were in love!

And when the girls wanted me to make them something I laid a pillowcase out on the floor of our room and made them some bubble wands that, I absolutely swear, they said made the day the best day ever 🙂

For this project you will need:

  • 18 gauge galvanized steel wire
  • needle nose pliers
  • wire nippers
  • beads (with large holes)
  • ribbons
  • scissors
  • plastic bottles (to use as forms)

This is wire that you find in the hardware department at big box stores like Walmart. I got a ton of it because it might come in quite handy but they sell packages that range from around $2-5 (this being a $5 roll and I have a TON of this stuff left after making 3 wands).

Again, I was sitting on the floor of my room so please disregard the poor quality of photographs! I tried to work out by the pool but it suddenly got quite busy and with the 5 kids we already had jumping in and out plus the good 10 additional people I couldn’t work out there without getting splashed!

You’ll need to cut a length of wire that is about 1.5-2 feet long. You can totally eyeball it.

Wrap the wire around something round, (I used beverage bottles from around the room) to make the loop for your bubble wand. Give the shorter end of the wire a quick turn around the other wire to hold the size/shape.

Carefully remove from the bottle neck.

Begin twisting the shorter end of the wire around the longer end to keep the shape of the loop. You can use just your fingers or use a pair of needle-nose pliers to assist (I also got these from the hardware section at the big box store!)

Nip the excess wire as close as you can to the coils you made and then use your pliers to smash the cut end down and dull the cut edge. Be sure to check from a few angles so little ones don’t accidentally hurt themselves when playing.

Begin beading the wands however you choose. I used some really pretty faceted “jewel-like” beads I thought the girls would like after a craft section run at Target a few weeks back 🙂

Once you achieve the length you are going for wrap the end of the wire tightly around something else round. I used a smaller water bottle neck.

Repeat the process of wrapping the wire, nipping it short and using pliers to dull down the cut edge.

You can totally leave your wands as is, with a larger and smaller loop to blow bubbles through, but since we had some issues with not shoving lips through the loops I added ribbons to the smaller end to give the girl another bubble making option.

Cut several lengths of ribbon to your desired length (I’d say mine were about a yard) and then pull the middles through the smaller loop of the wand.

Pull the ribbon through itself and tighten to secure just like making tassels.

Get a big bowl of bubbles and you’re ready to party!

You can blow through the larger end to make bubbles one at a time but our girls were a bit impatient.

They instead dipped the ribbons into the bubbles and then whipped their wands around in the air to make TONS of bubbles at a go. It was pretty awesome though we went through our bubbles a bit quickly!

In the end it was fun, inexpensive and how can you go wrong with a craft that took part in “the best day ever”? Oh, and just because I promised they could choose the best picture, here are the girls in what was DEFINITELY the best pic taken that day 🙂 Happy beading!
