Disney's MALEFICENT Movie Review

The day is FINALLY here – opening day for Disney’s MALEFICENT!

If you have been following me over the last few weeks, you know that I had the honor of visiting Los Angeles for an exclusive MALEFICENT press event, which included an early preview of the film. There is so much to say about MALEFICENT, but let me first begin with a quick synopsis, in case you are not familiar with the story:

MALEFICENT explores the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the classic SLEEPING BEAUTY and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king’s newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Aurora is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy. >Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land and is forced to take drastic actions that will change both worlds forever.

Disney's MALEFICENT Movie Review

One of the most popular questions I have received over the past few days about MALEFICENT is regarding the PG rating and if the film is appropriate for children. As with any movie, each parent should make that decision for their own children, but I will add that while it is a darker live-action Disney film than most, it should not be scary for children 8 and up. Again, please use your best judgement in what is appropriate for your own children, but also know that the movie is rated PG as well.

How is Angelina Jolie as Maleficent?

I have always been a fan of Angelina Jolie’s acting style and her performance as Maleficent did not disappoint. I could feel Maleficent’s emotions (which were sometimes heartbreaking) throughout the movie and though she is true villain, it was difficult not feeling compassion and sympathy for her. To know why, you will need to see the film! [Angelina talks about her role as Maleficent in my recent interview] Overall, she hit it out of the park and I cannot imagine a different actress as Maleficent.

How is MALEFICENT different from the classic SLEEPING BEAUTY?

MALEFICENT is VERY different from the animated SLEEPING BEAUTY film. MALEFICENT includes more depth and complexity, but is still able to carry the classic SLEEPING BEAUTY story, such as Princess Aurora receiving the sleeping curse.

It is rare that you see a story told from the villain’s perspective and I am glad that Disney chose to do so. Maleficent’s world (The Moors) in the film is dark and gothic-like, which gave the film a raw emotion and tone unlike the classic Disney story. [see what Elle Fanning (Princess Aurora) has to say about this remix of SLEEPING BEAUTY]

Overall thoughts of MALEFICENT?

Overall, I really enjoyed MALEFICENT. The CG animation was nicely done, believable and sucked me into a fantasy world, which went from light to dark and back again. This new take on SLEEPING BEAUTY was entertaining, action-filled and full of emotion, but couldn’t have been done with Angelina as Maleficent. Honestly, I look forward to seeing it again soon. 🙂

Again, MALEFICENT open today, May 30th, in theaters, so make sure you check it out! Once you do, come back here and leave me your thoughts! xoxo
