DIY Vintage Inspired Chocolate Heart
When I was a kid I remember that my grandmother used a very, very old chocolate heart box on her nightstand to hold keepsakes. I don’t know exactly what was in it, because it wasn’t my place to know, but I remember my grandfather telling me about when he gave the box to her in spite of the fact they didn’t really have the money for chocolates.
These days we eat our chocolate and toss the box. After all they’re all commercialized ideas of what love and adoration means in red and pink and I think maybe we’re far more cynical than people were back then. So I decided to see about turning an everyday heart shaped box of chocolates into a vintage inspired keepsake. And no worries, there’s still chocolate in this cutie!
For this project you will need:
- Heart shaped box of chocolates
- vintage style scrapbooking paper
- burlap printed scrapbooking paper
- roll crepe paper (party section) in two colors
- spray adhesive
- sewing machine
- hot glue gun
- accent from vintage card (check this post out for some resources)
Here is my box of chocolates. Nothing special…yet!
Remove the top from the box and place the chocolates somewhere safe.
Spray the top side with adhesive and smooth your vintage scrapbooking paper on top. Allow to fully dry and then trim the excess paper away.
Cut a smaller heart out of your burlap printed paper and, with spray adhesive on the back side, attach to the center of the heart.
Take three 2 foot long pieces of crepe paper in your main color (red) and one more piece in your contrast color (purple) and sew them together right down the middle.
Fold over on the seam and snip down to the end to create fringe.
Using your hot glue gun draw the shape of your burlap heart and glue down the middle of the crepe paper to it. Continue around 3 or 4 times, or until you’re happy with the fullness.
Cut out your vintage accent…
And embellish with sequins or glitter or bows.
Hot glue the connecting points to your crepe paper heart.
And when the chocolates are all gone, there will still be a wonderful keepsake box to put pictures and mementos!
