Do you let your children watch DVDs on a long car trip?

I must admit that the car TV was a no-no for me once I had children. I planned on limiting TV when at home. Watching TV while driving was not an option. I had heard more than one friend bitterly complain about the way her kids insisted on watching the TV on the way to the bank.

My resolve held firm until we planned a trip to the beach with our then super-talkative 18-month-old. I planned on sitting in the back with her while my husband drove. Our older daughter was and still is self-sufficient. She is one of those children who would use her dress as a puppet to entertain herself for the drive. My husband inisted that we get a car TV. I objected, but was overruled.

I freely admit that I don't know how we would have survived long car rides without the car TV. When I drive alone I can only stand so much Kidz Bop, or hearing the same knock knock joke, or playing I Spy. When my husband drives, I occasionally like to have a conversation with him.

We do have rules of the road for the car DVD: (1) No TV on for trips locally, (2) on a long trip kids watch one movie then spend the same amount of time readiing, drawing, etc., and (3) in cases of disagreement mom/dad choose the DVD.

What is your position on the car DVD?

I'm probably the wrong person to comment, because I have no problem with the car DVD or TVs at home.  Sure, I don't want my kids to sit in front of the the tube all day, but at the same time I'm not super strict about it either.

My little one has always hated riding in the car.  He hates the fact that he cannot move about and is essentially tied down to his seat.  For the first two years of his life, he would scream anytime he was riding in the car. (yes, even as a baby!)  I would bring snacks, toys, etc. and none of that would work.  I finally spent around $200 on a DVD player for the backseat and it was a complete life saver!  Seriously, he is a perfect angel now when we are in the car and I do not regret the decision at all, especially for those long car rides.

We live 7 hours from my in-laws and 10 hours from my parents. We use the car DVD player on the long drives to visit family. I don't always use it when we are running errands, but if I am going to be driving in heavy traffic or in any other sittuation where I need to focus on the road 100% then I turn it on. For me it has become a safety device. If my kids are watching a movie then I know they are occupied. There is less screaming for attention, less whining, less fighting. I think that if your kids need to be distracted by watching a movie in the car so you are not a distracted driver, then go for it!
