How old were your kiddos when you first took them to the movie theatre?

I really want to take my kids to Toy Story 3 in the theatres. They already know and love the characters so I know they would love the movie. My oldest will be 4 next month and my youngest is 2 1/2. I am sure my almost 4yo would be fine, I am not sure about my 2 1/2yo. I think he would do fine especially if it was a matinee. My husband doesn't think they could make it through the movie and he doesn't want to be "that family" that disrupts the movie.

When did you first take your kids to the movies?

Okay, so we tried took our 2 1/2 year old and 10 year old to Toy Story 3 last Friday.  Our 2 1/2 did awful.  He loves Toy Story, too.  At home.  The longest he sat was around 45 minutes or so, which is good for him, but the rest of the time he wanted to walk around, go up and down the steps and scream.  We even brought plenty of snacks and drinks for him, but he because sick of eating and drinking.  It was stressful for us.

Saying that, I have a friend who has a son the same age and he sat and watched the whole movie just fine.  I think it depends on your kid's personality.

So what you are saying is that just like everything else with parenting there is no right answer and you have to just hope for the best with whatever choice you  make?

Thanks a lot! ;)

We had a few AWFUL "first time at the movies" experiences.

I took my then-3-year-old to see Tarzan. In the first 5 minutes Tarzan's mom and dad are mauled and killed by a tiger off screen. Lots of roaring. 3 yo kept saying "Where Tarzan's Mom and Dad?"

I took the same child to see Elmo in Grouchland at the movie theater. Within 5 minutes Elmo's blanket fell down Oscar the Grouch's trash can or maybe it was the sewer. In any event 3 yo cried so hard, one of us had to go to the car for her blankie.

Other odd movies we took kids to. Lilo & Stitch — 4 yo was scared of Stitch when he froths at the mouth.

I took my 1-year-old to see Because of Winn Dixie at a Mommy-Me showing. All the other moms brought babies who slept through the movie. My 1-year-old climbed up and down the steps. Wouldn't eat any of the snacks. Was loud. He watched about 5 minutes of the movie.

I have not taken Jackson to a movie yet because I have a feeling it will be awhile before he can sit through a movie quietly.

Haley — You'll know when he is ready. Be prepared to bail if he isn't sitting still. I had to take my 2-year-old out of a play at the library as she would not stop talking to the characters.

I took my daughter to the mom & me movies until she was about 15 mos. Before that, she would sleep through them. Last summer at 3.5 it was hit or miss. At 4.5, it is better depending on the movie. I am also conscious of which showing we go to. I don't select a late evening show. ALso, I've found that the non-3D versions of movies tend to have more children.

We started introducing her to movies with free or $1 movies. Both theaters in our town have free or low cost movies either on the weekend or summer weekdays. Here is a link to my article with information on our theater chains' programs.

If I have the choice, I try to go over lunch so she eats during the show to keep her occupied for part of the time. We also have a $1 theater that we use for movies.

I have found that it depends on the movie. She was very good for Princess and the Frog and Shrek Forever After. However, when we saw Ice Age 3 this week, she was not as interested and was not as well behaved.

Gretchen was TINY. Just months old, but our theatre does Stars & Strollers, which is really for the mamas. It's cheaper, the volume is MUCH lower, no previews and everyone bring their babes so no one cares if anyone starts crying.

This was such a huge lifesaver for me! Gretchen & I still go together now that she's nearly 17-month-old and we just sit, she nurses & falls asleep. It's also perfectly timed with her naptime, so she just naps while I munch on my popcorn! So fabulous!

What a fabulous idea!  I wish we had something similar here in OK.

Wow! That does sound like a great idea! I wish I had a movie theater nearby that did the same!
