Summer travel season is winding down, but there’s still time for a good road trip or two!

For me, the best part of a road trip is the chance to really connect with my family. Sometimes I find it easier to have a conversation in the car than I do when we’re all sitting around the table. The lack of eye contact can actually make it easier to be truthful and honest, and of course, in the car there’s nothing else that I’m “supposed” to be doing, like dishes or replying to emails, so I can really focus on what people are saying.

One great way I’ve found to get those conversations started in the car is to create a stack of “Conversation Starter Cards” for the trip.

So, the first time someone says “I’m bored”, I bring out the cards! The rule is that someone pulls a topic from the stack, then that person has to say their answer, followed up by everyone else in the car answering, too. You are allowed to pass if you think a question is too personal. Believe it or not, we usually only get to one or two starters a day because once we start on these conversations, we start talking about other topics, too.

I try to divide the topics into three categories.

  1. About the trip itself – “Where do you want to go?” “What are you looking forward to?” “What is one thing that you want to do?” “What is something you don’t want to do?”
  2. Things about traveling – “What is your dream trip?” “The thing I miss most from home is…” “If I owned a hotel it would have…” “What was your favorite trip?”
  3. Our lives in general – “I love our family because…” “I get the most frustrated when we…” “I wish we could…” “My dream is to…”

I like to pull (or have a kid pull) a question from each category so that things don’t get too serious, too quickly!

Another thing I like to do while we play is munch on a snack! Snacking is another way to make the conversation flow freely and keep everyone comfortable.

I also have a special “trail mix” recipe I created that the whole family loves. I combine FLIPZ® Milk Chocolate covered Pretzels, and White Fudge Covered Pretzels, popcorn, peanuts, sesame sticks, or whatever I have on hand or want to use up before we leave town.

My family loves combining these flavors, as this combo gives you both sweet and salty with a nice crunch! For me, using FLIPZ® really makes the snack special and keeps the road trip from getting boring.
