Warmer weather is finally coming around up here in the Northern US and it is a glorious time of year. The fresh air, blue skies, and the grass are green again. Wonderful! No better time of the year to turn on the grill and make these delicious Honey Barbecue Chicken Drumsticks.

I found the sauce recipe on one of the most popular blogs around, How Sweet It Is. This is not the first recipe I have made and loved from HSIT, remember this delicious White Chocolate Butter Mint Ice Cream? To die for!

This sauce takes a bit of planning ahead, as it cooks down and is reduced on the stove for two hours. Truth be told, I only let mine cook for about 70 minutes and it was great. In fact, it was the best barbecue chicken I’ve ever made at home. A big win at our house for sure. Enjoy!

Ingredients

For sauce:

  • 2 cups ketchup
  • cup water
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 5 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/2 tablespoon molasses
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1/2 tablespoon ground mustard
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

For chicken:

  • several pounds chicken drumsticks thawed, patted dry, salt & peppered

Instructions

  • Combine all sauce ingredients in a saucepan and let come to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook uncovered for approximately 2 hours, stirring occasionally. The mixture will thicken and reduce a bit. Store in the fridge until ready to use.
  • Prepare your grill to about medium-high (About 450-f degrees surface temperature). Grill the chicken for approx. 30-35 minutes, flipping every 10 minutes. Wait to add the barbecue sauce until it has only about 10 minutes left to grill. Slather on the sauce to all sides of the drumstick, close the lid on the grill and finish cooking.
