How To Get Your Kids To Drink More Water

It’s easy for us to take for granted the fact that we can head to the tap and grab water to drink, but the fact is, kids all across our country simply are not drinking enough water. I know how I feel when I forget to hydrate throughout the day and the effect is multiplied for children who are so active and busy at school.

I’ve known first-hand the struggles of making sure kids are drinking enough water. My boys have always been busy little bodies and sometimes it’s tricky to make sure they are emptying those water bottles at school or drinking their water before they head out the door in the morning.

In the spirit of making sure kids all across our country are getting enough water, here are a few tips that have helped my family!

How To Get Your Kids To Drink More Water

  1. Make a fun chart your whole family can use to track how many glasses of water you’re drinking each day. Make a goal and stick stickers to the chart to mark how much water is being consumed. Your kids will see it as a game!
  2. Have your kids pick out cool character cups or funky water bottles to use at school! When they LOVE what the water is IN, they’ll love drinking it and showing it off to friends!
  3. Add MORE water to the juices your kids like to drink. Adding water to their orange juice with breakfast each day barely changes the taste and you’ll know they are drinking more!
  4. Encourage kids to drink water by having them see YOU drinking more water! Monkey see, monkey do!
  5. Use fun straws — like a silly straw — to entice kids to drink more!

Did you know that kids who drink 4 or more glasses of water each day are more likely to choose healthier options for food and beverages when they are at school? They’re also more likely to eat their fruits and veggies at mealtime — without reminders! — and are often keen to get their own water when they are thirsty!

However, since only 52% of moms regularly remind their kids to drink water, according to a recent survey, and 33% of kids find it hard to remember to drink water without a reminder, now is the perfect time to start some healthy water-drinking habits in your home!
