How To #SpreadTheCheer This Year
When you think of the holidays, what is the first thing that pops into your mind? Is it gift giving? The food? Spending time with family?
For me, it’s a mix of all of those things, with the underlying themes being thankfulness, love and giving back. Those things are really what this time of year is all about.
Speaking of giving back, AT&T has a fabulous campaign each holiday called #SpreadTheCheer that allows its employees to spread holiday cheese and help those around them.
I love the work that these selfless employees are doing and I’m excited to share that I was given the opportunity to do the very same in my community! What an honor it was to receive $500 from AT&T to give back to my state.
After thinking long and hard about how I wanted to #SpreadTheCheer, I had a flashback to my local food bank visit a few weeks ago. During this visit, I learned that the food bank can only feed about 1/6 of Oklahomans who are hungry. That statistic hit me in the gut. This $500 could help this food bank immensely.
So, it was time to get shopping.
Funny enough, when I started the grocery shopping I had no idea where to even begin! I’ve never had a budget quite like this and I wanted to make sure that I didn’t spend it foolishly.
Knowing that it would be best to purchase non-perishable items, I went straight to the canned vegetables aisle and loaded up. Then I picked up rice, beans, cereal…I was quickly becoming a shopping pro. I had a great helper, too. 🙂
We kept hungry children and families on my mind and let the cart guide me where we needed to go. Somehow it worked out.
We were able to purchase several cans of vegetables, fruits, pasta, beans, prepared box meals, cereal, soups and a whole lot more. Charlie also learned about the spirit of giving and loved doing it.
I cannot wait to get this to the food bank so that they can distribute it to in-need families in Oklahoma!
I encourage you to #SpreadTheCheer this holiday season by giving back to your community, too. Capture your good deed in a photo and tweet it using the hashtag.
