Interview With A Blogger: Canadian Dad, Chris Read
Hey there, Chris!
What prompted you to start blogging?
I started blogging at the urging of a psychiatrist of all things. I was going through a tough time after my father passed away and she recommended I do something that helped clear my mind. Writing fit the bill and I haven’t looked back since. To be honest, the topic of my blog could have been anything but when I found the domain for canadiandad.com, I knew I had found my niche.
Tell us about your day job/educational pursuits?
Although I spend a lot of time on my blog, I actually have a full time job as a forensic analyst with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. To answer your immediate question, no, it is nothing like the show CSI, except for the fact that I own a pair of sunglasses and occasionally take them off slowly for effect. I also sing in a local band and just started guitar lessons, mostly because life isn’t busy enough, you know??
Where’s the farthest from home you’ve ever travelled? Tell us about your experience.
My wife and I attended a wedding in Punta Cana a few years back, and, long story short, never, ever put yourself in a situation where you need to be taken by ambulance to the local hospital. First, the ambulance is more like a small pickup truck and second, no one at the hospital speaks any kind of English…. Scary stuff.
What skill do you hope to master over the next year?
This one is easy for me. Organization. I have been flying by the seat of my pants for almost two years now and it’s finally time for me to smarten up and start taking this thing seriously. You never know what will materialize when you put in the work and I am ready to take the next step with my writing and social media aspirations.
What’s your current favourite song/band? And what are you reading?
Oh man, my musical taste varies from day to day. Right now though, I have Royals by Lorde stuck in my head and I also think Sirens by Pearl Jam is brilliant. Pearl Jam, Neil Young and Foo Fighters are at the top of my favourite bands list. The book I am currently glued to is Humans of New York by photographer Brandon Stanton. It’s an amazing project and an even better read.
Share three blogs you adore!
Another tough question due to the fact that I read so many great blogs… Here we go:
- Schmutzie: Elan is a great person and an even better writer. She shares stories the way she feels them without watering anything down and is a breathe of fresh air in the blogging space.
- Honea Express: Whit Honea is one of those people who’s writing you read and then wonder why he has a blog as opposed to being a best selling author. His writing makes you feel emotions you didn’t even know were possible and I feel lucky to know him.
- Kindness Canada: Ok, a bit of a cheat here in that this site belongs to me. The catch is that the stories are written by people from across Canada. The goal is for people to submit their stories of kind things that have happened to them or that they have done. I have never been so inspired than when I read all the submissions that come in on a daily basis and I high hopes for the future of the site.
