Interview With A Blogger: Joann MacDonald, Woman In Real Life
I had the honor of meeting today’s interviewee a few weeks ago at an event in Toronto and I can say without a doubt that she’s just as lovely as you’d imagine from reading her beautiful blog! If you adore good eats and an inspired look at motherhood, you’ll love Joann MacDonald‘s Woman In Real Life. Take a peek below to learn more about this Canadian mama!
So, what prompted you to start blogging?
I started Woman in Real Life after I quit my job in communications and went back to freelance writing. I wanted to “modernize” my writing skills by learning all about blogging and social media. And I’m so happy I did, because it keeps me connected with the world outside my walls. I correspond with all kinds of creative people I wouldn’t otherwise have known.
Tell us about your day job/educational pursuits?
I write articles for magazines on a diverse range of topics, from healthy eating to home organization to education. I also write blog posts and website content for corporations and small businesses. I studied magazine journalism in university and, after 14 years in corporate communications, I’m thrilled to be back to writing creatively.
Where’s the farthest from home you’ve ever travelled? Tell us about your experience.
I guess it was Italy for my honeymoon. We spent three weeks there, going everywhere from Venice to Florence to Rome. And we stayed with my husband’s relatives in a small town near the beach. When you’ve grown up in a “new” country like Canada, Italy is completely magical – so much history, art and beauty. I am dying to go back!
What skill do you hope to master over the next year?
I would like to learn to sit down and read a book again. For several years, my kids required so much attention I found it difficult to read. Now that they are old enough to occupy themselves for a bit I have trouble sitting and reading for long stretches. I always feel like I have to be doing something – cleaning, cooking, laundry, blogging, writing.
What’s your current favorite song/band? And what are you reading?
I am forever devoted to Nirvana. My friends and I saw them perform in Buffalo once and it was the best show ever! But since they aren’t producing new songs (for obvious reasons), my other loves are Ryan Adams, Pearl Jam and Jack Johnson. I grew up with my big brother blasting Led Zeppelin all the time. I never think to put their albums on, but a Led Zeppelin song on the radio in the car on a summer day can’t be beat. In terms of what I’m reading, it’s mostly vegan cookbooks. I can’t get enough of them. I cook only a fraction of the recipes, but I read them cover to cover.
Share three blogs you adore!
