Interview With A Blogger: Laura Franklin, Better In Bulk
Today I’m excited to be chatting with Laura Franklin of Better In Bulk! Keep reading to learn more about this awesome mom who believe that when it comes to kiddos, great food, candy, beautiful photography — everything’s better in bulk!
So, what prompted you to start blogging?
I started blogging in 2007 to keep my mom up to date on what my kids were doing all the way across the country. My blog was more of an online scrapbook for the first year and a half until I started reading other blogs and realized I could do more.
Tell us about your day job/educational pursuits?
I have been a stay-at-home mom for over 17 years. Along with my blog, which is now a full-time job, I have also spent time as a photographer, taking pictures of everything from pregnant mamas to weddings and families.
Where’s the farthest from home you’ve ever traveled? Tell us about your experience.
When I was newly married, my husband and I traveled to Moscow, Russia (and other nearby cities) for an internship with the Moscow News. We planned to fly in to Helsinki, take a bus and a train to Moscow, and then contact some of his friends in the area to find a place to stay for the 7 weeks we would be there. This was before email was used by everyday people and international calls were astronomical. We probably had a couple hundred dollars to our name after buying our plane tickets. The week before we headed on a plane across the world, I found out that I was pregnant with our first baby. Our summer in Russia was quite the adventure – sleeping on couches and eating apples (one of the only things I could tolerate with my morning sickness). I ended up traveling all over Moscow on my own while he was at work….but was really happy to come back home.
What skill do you hope to master over the next year?
I am hoping to finally improve my food photography skills! I have been posting 2-3 recipes a week on my blog this past year, so I’m getting plenty of practice if nothing else!
What’s your current favorite song/band? And what are you reading?
I love country music, but I rarely have a favorite song or band. It all depends on the mood I’m in — I prefer variety. I am currently reading T.A. Barron’s The Heartlight Saga… because the author sent it to me personally, so I had to read it!
