So, what prompted you to start blogging?
I was in college, visiting my hometown and sitting in my favorite coffee shop, when a woman who wrote for a living told me, “You want to be a writer? You need to start a blog.” I thought it sounded so weird but as soon as I got back to my apartment at school I signed up with Blogger and quickly became addicted to writing and posting and the whole world of blogging. I’m so glad she told me to do it.
Tell us about your day job/educational pursuits?
After graduating from college, I went on to get my master’s in Children’s Literature. I’m extremely interested in cultural and gender studies, so I focused my thesis on Disney’s Princess films.
I continued to blog throughout grad school and a couple of years later, I started a business called Cave Girl Consulting, which is a Paleo coaching service.
Last August, I quit my day job at a software company in Virginia to live with my fiance in Minneapolis. We decided that it was a good time for me to take my blog and my business full-time for a year or two and see how it goes. I still have a long way to go to get to where I’d like to be, but so far it’s been great.
Where’s the farthest from home you’ve ever travelled? Tell us about your experience.
I went on a trip to England, France, and Italy when I was in high school. It’s one of my favorite memories from that time in my life.
What skill do you hope to master over the next year?
I’d like to get into video. I’ve made a few in the past, but they take me a long time to edit and I never really love them when they’re done. I want to upgrade my camera soon and learn a really great editing software and start posting videos regularly.
What’s your current favourite song/band? And what are you reading?
My favorite band is and always will be Death Cab for Cutie. We’ve been coming up with playlists for our wedding, though, and my favorite song to listen to lately is “Your Hand in Mine” by Explosions in the Sky, which is what our first dance song will be.
I just finished reading B.J. Novak’s “One More Thing” and loved it so much that I’m thinking of reading it again!
