Preparing Your Blog, as a Business, for BlogHer
This post is strictly focused on the business side of preparing for BlogHer. (no packing or wardrobe tips here)
BUSINESS CARDS & PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS
Whether you are headed to BlogHer to connect with businesses or meet up with old friends, you will want to have business cards on hand to pass out. Typically, business cards should include your:
Additional information can include:
FACEBOOK PAGE URL
Order business cards and promotional materials now so you are not panicking or paying costly rush shipping costs later. Great companies to order from include MOO, Vistaprint, and Tiny Prints. Keep in mind that you may hand out YOUR promotional materials at BlogHer, not your sponsor’s info.
KNOW WHO YOU ARE
Yes, I am serious. Think about this before you go. You will be asked “What do you blog about?” or “What does your business do?” about a gazillion times, so make sure you know how to respond. There is no need to have a canned speech, but consider practicing your response out loud. Be yourself, but highlight your best attributes and what your blog is about.
CLEAN UP YOUR BLOG OR WEBSITE
Simplify your blog or website design. Clean up sidebars (keep widgets to a minimum), update bios, fix broken links, make that switch to WordPress, and make sure your contact information is easy to find. Also, do this now, not later. You will have enough packing/planning/last minute details to worry about the week before BlogHer to deal with the stress of a potential blog or website issue.
If you plan on using apps with your smartphone while attending BlogHer, download them now and test them out. Make sure you update each one before you leave as well. Some recommendations include:
- Instagram (photos)
- Foursquare (location-based)
- Cozi (calendar/agenda)
- Tweetdeck (Twitter)
- RedLaser (Bar Code & QR Code Scanner)
CREATE A LIST OF WHO YOU WANT TO MEET
Create a simple list of brands and bloggers you want to meet during the conference so you don’t forget. Make sure you include names, blog or business name, and phone number if you have it.
MAKE AN EXPO HALL PLAN
The expo hall is HUGE, so make a plan. Write down the brands you absolutely want to meet and visit them first. If you already know some PR rep names, make a list so you do not forget when you meet them face to face. Also, pre-print sticky labels that include your name, address, blog url, email address and phone number so you can easily enter sweepstakes and fill out forms while making your way through the booths.
MAKE AN AGENDA
This is VERY important. Create a simple document, spreadsheet, or an advance agenda program to record:
- flight information
- sessions you are attending and speaking at
BlogHer can be very distracting and time flies by quickly, so try to refer to your agenda often to avoid missing something important.
UPGRADE YOUR SMARTPHONE OR LAPTOP
If you plan on upgrading your smartphone or laptop this year, you may consider doing so before BlogHer. If you have to choose between the two, go with a new smartphone so you can take photos and record moments during your stay. That said, laptops or tablets are great for taking notes during sessions.
