Share Positivity and Speak Beautiful with Dove

I’m obviously thrilled to be the mother of two boys, but like a lot of moms of boys I sometimes wonder what it would be like to have a daughter. It isn’t that I have some fantasy about wearing matching dresses with my daughter and taking her for manicures, that’s not who I am and even if it were, it might not be who my daughter is.

It’s more that as proud of, and grateful for, the opportunity I have to raise strong, independent boys who respect others and themselves, I wonder what it would be like to do that for a girl. Girls today face so many obstacles to self esteem. A lot of the traveling I do is dedicated to helping women and girls around the world have better chances. But I also know from talking to the girls in my life (my nieces, the daughters of friends, my son’s female friends) that girls in our part of the world face challenges, too. I remember some of those challenges from my own childhood, but I can see how our Internet culture has amplified those challenges as well. I try to make sure that the girls in my life know that the most important thing they can be is themselves. That they don’t have to bow to pressure to look or act a certain way.

That’s what I love about the self esteem education that Dove provides girls. Dove has been championing women and women’s self esteem for a long time now, we all know the ads! But they also have a project that speaks directly to young girls, many of whom face the same issues we all do about body image and self worth. The new #WMsharepositivity campaign is all about finding out the ways that mothers (and loving aunts and friends like me) help the girls in their life.
