Sun Safety Is the Only Way to Enjoy Summer
I love summer and so do my kids, but one thing I worry about constantly is making sure that my family is staying safe while enjoying the summer weather.
Most of us think we know everything there is to know about sun safety, but I also think we don’t really grasp how important it is until a loved one is affected. This video from one of my fellow bloggers, Heather Armstrong, of dooce.com shares a personal story from her own experience with skin cancer that is quite eye-opening.
I find Heather’s personal story about her own struggle with skin cancer, and her realistic take on the difficulty of getting sunscreen on your kids to be so refreshing. Heather is always so honest about her life and I’m glad she’s using her platform to make sure others are aware of the dangers of not practicing proper sun care.
Now that one of my kids is a teenager, I know I’m not always going to be around to remind him take care of himself (like putting on sunscreen). Saying that, I’m hoping that I’ve instilled that idea early enough, as well as protected him when he was younger, so that it has become second nature to him.
You probably know the basics of sun safety: Always wear a hat, always wear sunscreen, try to keep covered, but this handy image from the Environmental Working Group is a great reminder.
