Taking a Family Road Trip? Win a Subway Car Kit! {GIVEAWAY CLOSED}

::GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED:: Congrats to our winner, Jaent F!

A couple months ago, we took a small, three hour road trip to Dallas, TX,  and it was a DISASTER!  My kids were bored and whiny, because I didn’t pack any snacks, games, or activities.  What a dummy.  So what did we end up doing?  Getting sugary, greasy snacks from gas stations along the way, and using my purse contents as entertainment.  Bad idea, and bad plan.  Do you plan on taking a family road trip soon?  If so, Subway wants to make your trip more manageable, entertaining and healthier.

Subway and National Geographic are teaming up for a “Taste of Adventure” contest for kids ages 6-14, and the winner will receive an Alaskan Family Adventure!  To enter, have your kiddos visit www.Subwaykids.com, and have them share their most exciting journey, whether it be past, present, or a future dream vacation.  They can also enter at any Subway store!

Subway also has a cool restaurant locator that helps you find Subway locations along your road trip route, so you are not stopping by those gas stations, as I mentioned above, or driving through unhealthy fast food joints.  Get this neat application at www.subway.com/Applicatios/locator/index.aspx.

photoSubway wants to provide one lucky winner with a Car Kit insulated lunch tote full of colors, travel games, coloring books and a $15 gift card, valued at $35-40.  Kits may vary in color, games, coloring books, etc.

On car trips we used to sing silly add-on songs (down by the bay and sticky sticky bubble-gum)and listen to stories on cassette tapes. (Yes, this was a few years back.)Now we have the dvd player for my youngest son and everyone else has their phones and ipods. I miss the bonding of those earlier times.

Lots and lots of healthy snacks are the only way to make it through road trips! I am also thankful for the movie player in the van. I don’t know how parents survived road trips before movies in the van!

  4. Deb says:

Napping. Seriously. I have always tried to leave on road trips before dawn so that we are close to our destination!

  5. Great contest! My tip is to make a binder for each kid with printable mazes, scavenger hunts, word searches etc. I put a cheap pencil pouch in each binder with pens, pencils and colored pencils (no crayons – they melt) and then they are kept under wraps until we leave. This makes it fun for the kids!

mad libs are great, everybody loves them. keeping the cooler stocked with capri suns or juice boxes. healthy snacks but also having some cookies to munch on is always good. movies are a plus but I don’t have a player in the car. music also does well.

  7. Jill says:

Before our road trips, I always purchase a new activity book for them. Rand McNally has a great one!

When we go on car trips I pack a fun bag for each of the grandkids filled with fun surprises. They never know whats in their bag but they have fun and it keeps them occupied for quite awhile. Thank you!

First I must say, I am from Fort Worth so you are only three hours from me, that’s neat!

My kids love electronics so anything that is electronic they love in the car…. but we also play fun games like the alphabet game. Where you have to find the letter A someone along the road (license plate, road sign) then you move on to the letter B and so on. You can’t point out letters out of order and finding those tough ones like Q and Z makes it challenging. We don’t compete with it, just whoever sees it finds it. We work as a team!

Along with snacks/drinks/etc. we buy a new toy for my son and save it until the trip to open it to keep him occupied….

helpful tip: instead of using blankets for the kids in the back seat when they get cold on trips, we use beach towels. that way the kids already have a towel handy to wipe their mouths, clean up, etc

When I traveled with my 3 girls, who are grown now, we tried to travel later in the eve and into the wee hours as they slept. Now I travel with my grandgirls and it is easy. They have always been 2+ hours away and so take the roadtrip very well. We play I spy, I’m thinking of something & I see something that you don’t see. Also have hilarious singing competitions!

  34. 1) Do not forget the DVD
    2) Do not forget their fav CD’s
    3) Do not feed them meals before you start–toss snacks at them as needed

I spy and music now that our DVD player isn’t working. I have to say something about Subway. I don’t understand why my daughter thinks it is so great. I had a chance to have a Lobster dinner the other day but she whined that she never gets to pick where we go and I had to settle for this? I wanted to crawl in a hole when my husband tried to convince her maybe next time. She never gets her way but he had told her earlier that she could have her favorite, Subway. Last night she wanted subway on the way home from the amusement park but he told her she could have it today because we wanted Pizza last night and that they could get it on the way to Long Island before they stayed overnight to go to the beach. Am I crazy but why do kids like Subway so much? If I win this I will be #1 not even for the games but for the gift card. I think she’s crazy….lol I guess it better than some other fried food that kids like.

My travel tip is to take a break from driving about every 2 hours. You can use it as a restoom stop, a gasoline fill-up time, a meal or snack break, or just a time to stretch everyone’s legs. Everyone will be a happier camper while riding in the car with frequent breaks – and it makes for a safer driver too! Happy trails!

Thank goodness for DVD players! We buy a couple new movies before we head out on the road for a long trip.

  42. We bring healthy snacks, drinks and electronic toys (DS,I-Touch,I-Pods, etc.) for the kids to play. We make sure to stop for lunch or at least some place to stretch our legs. If it’s a long road trip we make sure to stop some place in middle that the kids will enjoy (maybe a special store or a quick stop at a state park). And I always have a roll of paper towels up front with me for quick spills, sticky hands, bloody noses, etc.)

  44. I got my daughter a coloring activity for her for our little 4 hour road trip yesterday. That and listening to hubby’s christian reggae album helped. She loves christian reggae and rap! Go figure! LOL

  45. zmama says:

I love to bring along fun new sing along CDs!!

  46. Each of my kids has a Nintendo DS and those help a TON on road trips. We also listen to the radio and have sing alongs.

I will say though, it never hurts to just talk to them while I’m driving. Even though they are only 5 & 8, we have some great conversations!
