Kate Kilbane’s Irish Soda Bread Recipe

A traditional Irish soda bread perfect for St. Patrick’s Day or any day, really!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda make sure it's a fairly fresh box
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 eggs

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 350 and spray a 9-inch round cake pan with non-stick spray.
  • Sift together flour, baking powder and baking soda.
  • Add sugar, raisins, buttermilk and eggs and mix.
  • Pour mixture into pan and bake for 40 minutes.
  • When done, the top should be golden brown and a toothpick should come cleanly out of the center.
  • While the bread is still warm, melt about 1 Tbsp. of butter and brush on top of the loaf. Sprinkle sugar in the butter.
  • To eat, slather with butter! It’s really delicious that way! Especially with a hot cup of tea.
