DIY Jingle Bell Snowflake Door Hanger Craft
The holidays are upon us. There are two things that remind me of winter… snowflakes and jingle bells! I had found some pre-made bell snowflakes that I loved but they were expensive. Besides, I already had tons of bells just begging to be crafted with.
DIY Jingle Bell Snowflake Door Hanger
Now, I’ll be honest here. My first attempt was a fail. I was not going to be deterred however and found a method that worked and worked pretty well and you have the chance to learn from my mistake!
Here is my fail. For my first attempt, I used heavy gauge jewelry wire. When I tried to hang the snowflake the wire couldn’t support the weight of itself and it quite literally fell apart. Additionally, if you have a cat or cats, don’t expect to make this thing unhindered. They are going to be all up in your business. For real.
The second portion of the fail is that I thought I had the right-sized ribbon at home and I did not. After driving 45 minutes into town, it was discovered that the wallet was still sitting at home. In spite of all of the trouble this little DIY caused me I still absolutely love my loud, jingly door hanger!
Supplies Needed for Jingle Bell Snowflake Door Hanger
- jingle bells in three sizes
- 1/4 inch ribbon
- galvanized 20 gauge wire (from the hardware department)
- needle nose pliers
- hot glue gun
- ribbon
How to Make Jingle Bell Snowflake Door Hanger
Take your wire and cut 3 lengths of approximately 18 inches. Even up the ends and tie a not in the center of the wire. Make it as tight as you can but note that it will not be perfectly flush, which is actually what we need anyway. This is exactly what I did and the arms of the snowflake are a bit bendy. If you want the snowflake to be firmer, just double up your wire.
Take your wires and stretch them out to form the shape of a snowflake s well as you can.
Take your bells and use the hook on the backside to place on the wire. You have several options, here: do as I did and randomly place the bells for a fun and edgy look OR: make a pattern with your bells by varying the size and repeating it on each spoke.
After you finish the spoke you are working on, cut the wire about a quarter of an inch from the top bell.
Take that last bell and using your pliers, bend the wire around where the bell is attached to keep all of the bells on the wire.
Take your ribbon and thread it through the hole in the center of your flake. If you have a hard time, you can wrap the end in tape to make the process easier. At the end of the ribbon, double tie a knot to use as the hanger.
Take your largest-sized bell and cover the backside with a healthy dose of hot glue. Plonk it down in the middle of the snowflake, covering your wire and knotted ribbon.
If you use plain old silver bells (as I did because it is what I already had on hand) you may want to add a pop of color. Take your ribbon and hot glue the end to the backside of your snowflake.
Wrap it around each arm in a fun, haphazard manner, and voila! You are done and this baby is ready to start jingling up your scene! See you next week with even more snowflake goodness!
