DIY Patriotic Fringed Bag
I have said it before and I’ll say it again… Fourth of July is my FAVORITE HOLIDAY OF ALL TIME. The firecrackers, the patriotism and the red, white and blue… it’s all so perfect!
And since my look has been leaning toward a more casual and boho type of vibe I’ve been really, really wanting a fringed purse. But I didn’t want to spend gobs of money AND I didn’t want it to be like every other bag I’ve seen. So I took to Amazon to find a fringed bag for less than $7. Yup. So cheap. Add a little bit of red, white, and blue paint to my bag and it screams Independence Day but I guarantee I’ll be rocking this a large portion of the summer!
For this project you will need:
- Fringed bag
- Acrylic paints in red, white and blue
- Paintbrushes
- Wax paper (optional)
- Blowdryer (optional)
Tape off where the fringe meets the bag to ensure you don’t accidentally paint too high.
For this look, you’ll want to paint your fringe red, white and blue but be sure to leave a handful of the original color to help it still match with the rest of the purse.
If the paint is drying slowly (the humidity here was KILLING me) you can use pieces of wax paper between the rows of fringe/colors to help keep things moving along.
And if it gets really slow going you can always bust out the blow-dryer. Be sure that each layer is completely dry before letting the fringe get all involved with the other colors.
And that’s absolutely it! If you buy a better quality purse you might want to go up from acrylic paints (which may in time chip away or crack on pleather) you can purchase Fiebings leather dye for a bag that looks fab for years!
BOOM! Red, white and blue-tiful!
Now all in all this cost me only $7 because the bag was super cheap and I had the paints on hand. It did take me about 3-4 hours to paint with how slowly my paint was drying but that should NOT be the case for everyone. And since about 3 hours in I busted out the blow-dryer, you’ll at least have that little tip earlier on if the humidity does get the better of you!
