How to Recycle Your Broken Crayons
STEP 1: Preheat oven to 275° Fahrenheit (135° Celsius). Coat a muffin tin with cooking spray.
STEP 2: Place broken, unwrapped crayons (in any combo you like) in the muffin tin.
Make fun color combinations!
STEP 3: Place into oven and wait for crayons to melt. Keep an eye on it, it doesn’t take long to melt!
STEP 4: Swirl melted crayons with a toothpick or something similar. (we used corn-cob holders since that’s all we had on hand)
STEP 5: Put in the freezer to harden.
STEP 6: Pop them out when hardened.
STEP 7: Time to color!!!
Have you tried this out yet?

Great, thank you Cher!
I love your site. Recycled crayons are a great idea for bday party goody bags or class gifts. We just made them for my daughter’s class for a holiday gift (just make sure to label them “crayons”). I make them by melting them in a jar in the microwave, then pour them into candy molds. This way you can make different shapes, like stars.
Kat-Great idea!! Thank you for that!
I’m going to have to try that for my art students! We have tons of broken ones to use! Cool idea!
We love this project, and took it one step further here

Allie-Wonderful idea!
What a great idea! Thanks so much for sharing!
Wanted to let you in on a great thing I found to do with those crayons. There is a group that makes crayons and sells them to raise money for cancer research. You can check it out.

What a great cause! Thank you for sharing that link, I think this will be an excellent project for the summer school break. 🙂
What a great idea!! My 18 month old has just started to color and breaks a lot of crayons. I will definitely be doing this. They look easy for my little one to hold onto too. Thanks!
Really cool idea. I’ll have to share this w/ my sis in laws who are teachers.
love that and everyone has broken crayons right?
That's a great idea!!! My baby is only 2 and he looooves to color, we don't have broken crayons yet, but we will, I'm sure! I will definitely do this project. Thanks! Yvette
What a super idea….stopped over from the Tweetgrid n now back to the action (ebmommy)
Thanks for stopping by!
I wonder why on earth I have never thought of that! We have so many broken crayons, this would go a long way to making new ones our of our old ones! Thanks for the idea!
No problem! It’s so much fun, too!
I love the idea of swirling them together when they’re melted. We made these this week and didn’t swirl them so they look more rainbowy (not a real word I know). You can have a look here http://www.frugalfamily.co.uk/2010/03/colorfoul-crayons.html.
My kids and I love this project. The biggest problem we have, though, is now the kids love to break the good, fresh crayons!!
That is an awesome idea. We have tons of broken crayons.
