Red, White & Blue Rice Krispie Stars
It is so hard to believe that July 4th is here in just a few short weeks! Are you already in planning mode for the big day like I have been?
The big parade, the festive fireworks….the food. Let’s get right down to it – it’s mostly about the food.
Today’s special recipe for Independence day includes a family snack staple – Rice Krispie Treats – in red, white, and blue layers, then cut out with a star cookie cutter.
TIP: I recommend using the CybrTrayd RM-1143/W R&M Star 3.5″ Cookie Cutter for this recipe.

Red, White & Blue Rice Krispie Stars
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup plus 1 Tablespoon 9 Tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
- 2 10 oz bags of medium sized marshmallows, divided
- 9 cups Rice Krispies cereal divided
- Blue food coloring I used Americolor royal blue
- Red food coloring I used Americolor Super Red
Instructions
- Lightly butter a 9x13 pan and set aside.
- In a large microwave-safe bowl, microwave 3 Tablespoons of butter and 30 marshmallows for 30 seconds. Stir and continue to microwave in 30-second increments until the marshmallows are melted and resemble marshmallow creme.
- Add a few drops of blue food coloring to the melted marshmallow mixture and stir to incorporate.
- Fold in 3 cups of Rice Krispies cereal and mix to combine.
- Transfer the blue Rice Krispies mixture into the bottom of the 9x13 pan and press down firmly. Refrigerate for 10 minutes.
- Microwave 3 Tablespoons of butter and 30 marshmallows for 30 seconds in a microwave safe bowl. Stir and keep microwaving in 30-second increments until completely melted.
- Fold in 3 cups of Rice Krispies cereal and mix to combine.
- Place the plain Rice Krispies (no coloring) mixture on top of the chilled blue layer. Press down firmly. Chill for 10 minutes to help set the layers.
- Add the remaining 3 Tablespoons of butter and 30 marshmallows to a microwave safe bowl. Microwave and stir in 30-second increments until completely melted.
- Add a few drops of red food coloring and stir to blend well.
- Add the remaining 3 cups of Rice Krispies cereal and gently stir to coat evenly.
- Transfer the red Rice Krispies mixture on top of the plain layer and press down firmly. Chill for 10 minutes.
- Using a star cookie cutter, cut out 8-10 stars from the red, white and blue layered Rice Krispies treats. You can cut the stars out directly from the pan or you can remove the Rice Krispies treats and place on parchment paper. Just run a butter knife along the sides of the pan and the Rice Krispies should just slide out.
- ENJOY the treats as is or you can insert fun patriotic straws or popsicle sticks into them for a fun twist!
