14005

::GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED::  Congrats to Heather!

Bissell must have known that I had about 20 horrible stains on my living room carpet when they contacted me about reviewing their Little Green® compact deep cleaner!  I have been a loyal fan of Bissell since I purchased my PowerForce® Bagless Vacuum a few years ago, so I felt confident in testing their carpet deep cleaners as well.  Some of the neat options that the Bissell Little Green® include are: (taken from Bissell website)

  • strong spray and suction clean and help dry in one step
  • long power cord and compact design make cleaning hard-to-reach areas easy
  • stores Ready-to-Use so when accidents happen

Bissell is also taking steps on making the Little Green®, well, more green.  The Little Green® tanks and hose are now PVC free, and the carton is recyclable with no styrofoam or PVC inserts.  Learn more about Bissell’s earth-friendly products at www.bissell.com/sustainabledesign.com.

I must admit, I was a little skeptical of getting my stains out because I have white carpet.  Yes, I have two kids and WHITE carpet.  Not smart. Anyway, I pulled out the easy set-up instructions and got my Little Green® all ready to start cleaning.  I started with a medium grade stain, just to get the hang of it. [Read more...]

Do-It-Yourself Household Cleaners

100_2000

People are more environmentally conscious than they have ever been before. As a mom I am not only concerned about the overall environment but the environment in my home. I don’t want to expose my children to a bunch of chemicals, so I have begun to “green” my cleaning routines.
You can certainly go out and buy green cleaning products but some of the greatest cleaning products are items that can be found right in your own kitchen; baking soda and vinegar. Besides being good for the environment they are also inexpensive.

I will admit that until recently my uses for baking soda included using it to deodorize my fridge and baking purposes. I also had limited experience with vinegar, and only used it for cooking and dying Easter eggs. I have discovered that both of these products have so much more potential!

Vinegar can be used to make a window/glass cleaner, an all-purpose cleaner, and a floor cleaner.

Baking soda can be used as a tub and tile cleaner, oven cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, and scouring powder.

My favorite use for these products is one that I happened upon just the other day-unclogging sink drains. Just pour 1 cup baking soda down the drain followed by 1 cup of vinegar. After you pour them in, put the stopper in the drain and let it sit. I would recommend 1-2 hours. Follow this by pouring hot water down the drain. This really works, you don’t have to call a plumber, its economical, and so much safer than the chemicals you would normally use.

Here are a couple quick and easy recipes for household cleaners.

Mild All-purpose cleaner

1/4 cup baking soda
1 quart warm water

Glass cleaner

1/2 cup white vinegar
1/2 cup water

You can also find a variety of household cleaner recipes over at the Green Guide.

So, the next time you run out of cleaner and are thinking of buying more, just head to your kitchen and whip some up; not only will you save yourself time and money but your home will be safer!

Happy Cleaning!
