How to Make an Instagram Felt Purse
I love Instagram. Like tons and tons. As far as social media goes I think it’s the only one that I actually like.
Facebook is great for stalking old friends and seeing what distant family is up to so you can quietly judge them from afar (I kid! Mostly… 🙂 but I’d rather not hear the rants and opinions about big controversial matters status update after status update. I’m really bad about liking anybody else’s stuff on there because I often get frustrated a few scrolls down.
Twitter. Meh. I just don’t know what it is but I have a hard time getting down with it. Maybe it’s because you’re limited in characters and I’m a bit verbose.
But Instagram is the love of my social life. Most of my contemporaries have thousands upon thousands of followers and they share beautiful pictures all day long with bright, vibrant colors and pics of neat places I’ve never been to. Me? I share an absolute ton of cat and dog pics, the occasional neat thing I see, and occasionally a craft I’ve made. I’m quite aware that as a craft blogger I should probably share more of that stuff on my account but it winds up being a fun thing for me most of the time.
And I don’t care what you say but I’ll post a bazillion cat pictures with a goofy smile on my face all day long. All-day.
But let’s quit talking about it and start making this cute Instagram crossbody purse.
For this project you will need the following colors of felt and embroidery floss:
- cream/tan felt & embroidery floss
- black felt & embroidery floss
- white felt & embroidery floss
- dark gray felt & embroidery floss
- brown (more orange-y tan than straight-up brown) felt & embroidery floss
- red felt & embroidery floss
- yellow felt & embroidery floss
- blue felt & embroidery floss
- green felt & embroidery floss
You will also need:
- Free printable pattern (seen below)
- Scissors
- Spray adhesive
- Cord for strap
- Glue
Print out your patterns and cut your pieces out of the colors as directed above. You’ll need 2 of the large, tan/cream squares and just one of everything else.
Take your cut pieces and using spray adhesive put everything but the color stripes together. You can eliminate this step if you prefer, just stitch on one piece at a time.
Here is the template without words to help out.
Once your pieces are put together stitch the felt together with your matching floss. Just stitch around, making them large enough you can easily see them as that is a part of the handmade charm!
Now we’re going to add a strap with cording. This actually came from the jewelry-making section at Michael’s. It’s too cute and adds a lot of fun to my bag I think.
Pinch your cord so that half of it is beneath the felt and half is sticking out.
Start in the middle of the bottom of the bag.
Using cream/tan floss stitch the cording in. Two passes make for a pretty sturdy bag.
When you finish your first side run the cord as long as you’d like the strap to be while running to the bottom middle of the bag (to connect with the other end of the piece).
Glue the two cord ends together and allow to dry. Continue stitching the cord in.
And you’ve got a nifty little Instagram purse!
This bag is the perfect size for little necessities like your phone, keys, sunglasses, and the like. It’s not going to be sturdy enough to carry a brick or anything but it’s a good-sized pouch that can hold a decent amount of stuff.
So what do you think? I’m absolutely crazy about this bag and so is my Momma who keeps telling everybody about how cute it is even though I once heard her saying “I don’t know what an Instagram is either.”
