DIY Baby’s First Halloween Costume: Onesie Applique

This DIY will be the first in our DIY Baby’s First Halloween Costume series. This DIY project can be used for any occasion, not just for Halloween. I promise you will find yourself seeking out reasons to do these projects. Enjoy!

This first DIY is a must-know. You need this in your bag of tricks because it is fast, easy, and makes a big impact with little effort.

APPLIQUE

What you need:

• Heat n Bond
• iron
• fabric to applique
• graphic/stencil
• marker
• shirt/onesie or any other thing you want to applique

• sewing machine & coordinating thread (optional!)

1st: Print off a graphic or trace a stencil and cut it out

2nd: Cut out a swatch of fabric that is slightly larger than your graphic

3rd: cut Heat and Bond to the same size as the swatch

4th: iron Heat and Bond onto fabric according to manufacture’s instructions

5th: trace graphic onto Heat and Bond making sure to lay graphic wrong side up

6th: cut out graphic

7th: peel fabric away from Heat and Bond

8th: Place on onesie or whatever you are personalizing and iron according to manufacture’s instructions

You can be finished here. If you choose to be finished make sure to wash your item inside out and in a cold setting.

If you want to go the extra distance and if you have a sewing machine or if you are patient enough to hand sew, finish your project with your favorite stitch as shown in step nine.

9th: Stitch around the outer edge of your image. I chose a simple zig-zag stitch. A blanket stitch is another classic choice.

And you are done!

Try appliqueing a number on your child’s shirt for a fun and personalized Birthday shirt. Or maybe cut out letters and personalize a pillowcase or make an extra special Christmas stocking. The options are limitless!
