Fall is one of my favorite times of the year. After a hot summer, I’m always keen to feel that crisp chill in the wind. Add in rich Autumn scents, gorgeous fall colors, and the fact that boots and sweaters are finally the perfect attire, and I’m all in for fall. 

Easy Mason Jar Scarecrows Fall Craft

With the season upon us and me in a new house to decorate for its first Autumn, it’s time to hop on the DIY Fall decorations bandwagon. A sweet pair of these mason jar scarecrows would look adorable on any buffet or mantle. Taking this fall craft one step at a time, this project is super easy and perfect for crafters of any skill level. Want to see how to make a pair of your own?

Materials Needed for Mason Jar Scarecrows Fall Craft

• Glass Mason Jars with Lid and Ring
• Spray Paint Primer
• Tan Craft Acrylic Paint (we used Martha Stewart Crafts Satin in Acorn)
• Orange Paper
• Glue Stick
• Buttons
• Burlap Fabric (a Finer Mesh is easier to work with)
• Natural Raffia
• Fall Ribbon
• Fall Flowers

• Smooth Bristled Paintbrush
• Hot Glue Gun
• Black Paint Marker

How to Make Mason Jar Scarecrows Fall Craft

Prime the outside of your mason jars and allow several hours to dry fully. Using a smooth-bristled paintbrush, paint your jars tan. (We used Martha Stewart Crafts Satin in the color Acorn.) As you work, try to minimize your brush strokes for a smooth surface. Allow the paint time to dry fully. Paint the jar as many times as necessary for full coverage.

If you’re a planner, draw out the basic shape of a scarecrow face on a piece of paper. I traced my button eyes to make sure I got the scale right and then added a triangle for the nose and a stitched mouth. Once you’re happy with your design, hold it up to a jar and ensure that you’re happy with the size and look. You’ll use this drawing as a guide to help you decorate your jars. If you’re not a planner, feel free to wing it!

Cut a triangle nose out of orange paper. Glue onto your jar, ensuring the edges are well adhered to.

Once the glue is dry, draw stitches around the nose with a black paint marker. Add the smile below the nose.

Glue your buttons for eyes in place with a hot glue gun.

Cut a strip of burlap fabric 2 inches wide and long enough to wrap around the jar’s lid, a circle the size of the jar’s seal, and a larger circle approximately 6.5″ in diameter. Trace the top of the jar in the center of the larger circle and cut away the smaller circle.

Glue the long piece around the jar’s ring, keeping the overlap minimal, and cover the jar’s seal with the smaller circle. Slid the larger circle down around the jar’s lip. Screw the lid into place.

Using a narrow strip of ribbon, hot glue the burlap around the ring and the large circle to form a hat. Add a flower or a bow and glue it into place.

Take a small amount of natural raffia and bind it together by wrapping a small amount of string around it. Trim the raffia near where it is tied together. Use glue to attach 2 of these raffia bits beneath the hat’s brim on the jar.

For our lady scarecrow, cover the mason jar’s lid and ring just as you did for the first scarecrow mason jar and screw it into place. Create a bow out of fall ribbon and glue it to the glass jar just below the lid. Take a nice handful of natural raffia and tie it into 3 overhand knots, one on top of the other. Wrap cord or raffia around the last knot while adding glue so that the knot holds its shape. Adhere to the top of the mason jar lid with a large dollop of hot glue, pushing it into the glue until it is fully set.
